The mandatory module that can void your CFA result
It carries no marks and appears on no weight table, yet skipping it can undo the whole exam.

There is a component of the CFA Program that carries no marks, appears on no topic weight table, and can nonetheless void your entire result: the Practical Skills Module.
Confirmed What it is
Introduced with the 2024-era reforms, each exam level pairs with one Practical Skills Module: a short, self-paced online course teaching a hands-on skill. It is mandatory, and failing to complete it can void your result.
Read that again if you are used to thinking of the CFA as purely an exam. You can pass the paper and still not get the pass recorded.
What is changing for 2027
CFA Institute announced updates to the Equity Analysis, Macro Insights for Investing and Python modules at Levels 1 and 2, plus a brand-new Due Diligence module for Level 3, releasing later in 2026.
The direction is deliberate: the modules are part of a move toward job-relevant skills rather than an add-on. Treating them as a formality is increasingly out of step with how the Program is designed.
Why candidates get caught
The failure mode is predictable. The module carries no marks, so it slips down the priority list behind question banks and mocks. Then exam week arrives, all attention goes to the paper, and the module sits unfinished.
How to avoid it
- Schedule it early in your plan, not in the final weeks. It is short, so there is no reason to leave it.
- Treat it as an exam component in your calendar, because functionally that is what it is.
- Confirm completion rather than assuming: check the status in your candidate account.
